Orbital Cellulitis

Esther presented with life threatening orbital cellulitis. She was sucessfully treated with intravenous Rocephin

Sickle Cell Anemia

This patient presented with untreated
end stage Sickle Cell Anemia. His hemoglobin was only 4.2 and he had compensatory hypertrophy cardiomyopathy, as well as, heptatomegaly with jaundice.

He is currently stable after receiving a blood transfusion from one of the Italien volunteers at Ngangi who happened to have his same rare blood type.

Hyperthyroidism with Goiter

Dominique came to the center with malnutrition,hyperthyroidism and a large goiter.

She is presumptively being treated as Graves Disease and is receiving nutritional support and will be referred for surgical or radioactive Iodine treatments.

Childhood tuberculosis is common in the surrounding refugee camps. The disease is diagnosed largely by its classic symptoms and is presumptavely treated with antibiotic protocols

Kwashiorkor

The swollen legs and stomachs of Kwashiorkor are a common sight at the medical center. Children such as this boy undergo aggressive inpatient hyperalimentation and follow up at Ngangi's nutritional center

Herpes Zoster (shingles) in a Pediatric HIV patient

This infant HIV positive patient presented with Ophthalmic Herpes Zoster. The child was successfully managed with intravenous Acyclovir and longterm antiretroviral therapy.

Tetanus

This tetanus case (note the causative wound on the right lower chest) presented after unsuccessful treatment by a traditional healer with ritual scarification (note the extensive pinpoint tattoos.)

He was correctly treated at the medical center with antitoxin, antibiotics and muscle relaxants.

In 2008 over 250 cases of Cholera were teated at center Chorlera Ward without a single death.

This young girl is able to drink and take oral fluids again after lifesaving intravenous rehydration.

These monstrous deformities in a 34 year old patient are due to lymphatic infection with the parasite Filaria. Filarial Elephantitis remains a medical challenge for Doctors practicing Tropical Medicine.

This 5 month old presented with hydrocephalus as a sequella of untreated meningitis. The Center is looking for a way raise funds to have the child transfered to a neurosurgeon in Kigali, Rwanda for a ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

Burns with secondary infection

This 4 year old presented to the center with burns to the arms which became secondarily infected after being treated by the mother with a folk remedy concocted from flour. The mother resorted to folk remedies due to lack of money for medical care. The child was treated for free at the Ngangi Medical Center and is doing well.
